We would like to invite you to an upcoming talk and interactive session at Hosei University titled “Why Improv? — Spontaneity in Everyday Life.”

The session opens with a short presentation by Kaz Matamura, exploring how improvisation can sharpen awareness, listening, and communication beyond the stage. Moving away from the idea of improv as performance, the session looks at how these skills play out in everyday interactions — how we respond, adapt, and connect in the moment. The session will conclude with an interactive workshop, where participants will be guided through simple exercises to experience these ideas in practice.

Date: Saturday, 9 May 2026

Time: 15:00–16:30

Venue: Multimedia Studio 0300, 3F Boissonade Tower, Ichigaya Campus, Hosei University

About the speaker: Kaz Matamura is a Tokyo-based media trainer, theatre director, and acting coach. A classical Japanese dance master of the Fujima Souke school, she is the first Japanese teacher certified by the Royal Shakespeare Company and develops Shakespeare performance programs for ESL students.

Sincere thanks to our speaker Kaz Matamura, our discussants Stevie Suan and Mami Yorimitsu, our co-host Hosei University, and our supporting organisations — HKU Japanese Studies Programme, CUHK Department of Japanese Studies, HKUBS Alumni Network Japan, HKUST Alumni Network in Japan, and Commonverse — for their partnership and support in bringing this session to life.
